INFORMATION FOR OVERSEAS-TRAINED DOCTORS

Doctors who have obtained their qualifications overseas should consult the Australian Medical Council website about recognition of their qualifications in Australia.

Those who have obtained specialist qualifications overseas will normally be required to apply through the Australian Medical Council to undergo a vocational assessment by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

General information about working as a doctor in Australia can be found at the Australian government website DoctorConnect.

Entry into the RACS-AOA orthopaedic surgery training program

If you are a graduate of an overseas medical school seeking entry to the Surgical Education and Training (SET) program, please contact the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in the first instance. Please note that Part 1 of the selection process for SET is conducted through RACS.

Frequently asked questions relating to international medical graduates (IMGs) and the SET selection process can be found here on the RACS website.

Please note that applicants to SET must be Australian citizens or hold permanent residency in Australia for the full four- or five-year duration of the training program. Applicants must also hold unconditional registration as a medical practitioner in Australia.
